EarthQuake in UK

Earthquake UK

0100 GMT while updating one of my websites , my house shook gently for five to 10 seconds with a short spell of significant vibration. The wardrobe doors banged during this period, which subsided to another five to 10 seconds and then peace again. I switched on the lights and came out on the street to see almost all of my neighbours standing outside their homes and wandering about on what just happened as alarms were going off.

Earthquake - my first experience since we never have them in mauritius ; I dont know about the magnitude neither of the epicentre but i presume it should be somewhere in the midlands.

Was it was the biggest earthquake to hit England since 1990 ?

  1. BRITAIN was rocked by a major earthquake early today.

The tremor was felt across 300 miles from Brighton to County Durham and from Norfolk to Wales.

People were shaken from their beds shortly before 1am with buildings rocked and huge cracks appearing in walls.

The earthquake was measured at 5.1 on the Richter Scale with its epicentre in Lincolnshire.

It was not immediately known how much damage had been caused but there were no reports of any serious injuries.

Dr Brian Baptie of the British Geological Survey confirmed the event was an earthquake and said instruments spread across the country had recorded 5.1 on the Richter Scale.

He said: “It’s certainly one of the biggest we have felt in the UK in recent years, and the largest earthquake since 1990.

“We get earthquakes of this size roughly every ten to 20 years.”

He added that there would almost certainly be aftershocks to follow, but most of these would go unnoticed.

Emergency services were flooded with calls.

  2. In Farnborough, Hampshire, I was on the couch watching TV at that time. I did not feel a thing, and there was not even a ripple in my cup of tea.

I only became aware of the quake this morning when people were telling their stories on the local radio.
